OUR CONSIGNORS

The Rajj Collection

The consignor of the Rajj Collection bought his first gold coin in the early 1980s and within a short time he was bitten by the gold bug. This large collection of world gold coins was formed chiefly throughout the 1980s and 1990s with the goal of obtaining the largest coins from every country then listed in the standard catalogues. The collector became a fixture at Stack's auc- tions throughout these decades, and many of these pieces have crossed our auction block once before. Most of the coins offered here have been off the market for nearly two decades. While the

Rajj Collection contains a U.S. coin section that will be offered at a later date, offered here are almost 300 lots of world coins, nearly all gold, though with a few platinum issues thrown in!

Highlights of the big Rajj Collection include some modern gold, and a number of rarities including an impressive run of early British 5 Guinea pieces, a classic George IV Proof 5 Pounds, a beautiful Una and the Lion 5 Pounds, a spectacular Victoria Jubilee 5 Pounds, and a fascinating Russian 10 Ruble overstrike.

William Longsworth Carson was born and raised in Euclid, Ohio. After graduating from Duke University in 1938, he married Kathleen deHart of Woodbury, N.J., and returned to Ohio. There he began a family and, with his father, established a printing business, the Snapout Forms Co. of Chardon, Ohio. Bill busied himself over the years with church and civic activities in the small town.

One of his triumphs was leading the fund-raising and final dedication of a high school football field where Bob Hope officiated.

Ever the organizer, once Bill discovered coin collecting, he initiated a local coin club in Chardon and later partnered in a small coin business in Cleveland, The Money Shop. After moving to Sparta, N.J. in 1964, Bill quickly helped launch a local club. Later, he worked with others to develop a Whitman-like business called Shore Line.

"As far back as I can remember, my father collected something," says Bill's older daughter Andrea. When he was a young boy growing up between Cleveland and Miami, he collected stamps. It occupied him on the long trips back and forth. Between that and reading books, he also "accumulated" a great deal of knowledge about geography, history, and travel to exotic places. Bill was always able to provide the name or location of some obscure and tiny country.

When Bill's older son Dan began sorting through rolls of old coins with a friend, a fatherly interest quickly became a fascination, and Bill began his own collection. Before long, Dan was lugging a heavy valise filled with coins through city streets to coin shows throughout the Midwest.

As coins began to sprinkle themselves about the house, even the younger children learned to examine pocket change and hold the

coins by their edges. On a family trip to Williams- burg, the six Carsons filed into the front pew once George Washington's of the historic church. As the collection plate neared for the offering. Bill and Kathleen realized that between them, they only had a $20 bill and some change, including a dime with a "good date." They had to put something in the empty plate. Quickly, the choice was made and the large bill went in.

Another summer, the family boarded a train in Chicago. This vacation would include a coin show in San Francisco. Bill decided that toting his coins cross-country in a special case might attract attention to the valuables. Instead, he loaded them into Kathleen's old suitcase. It still bore her maiden name initials. In the middle of the night a train change was required in Ogden, Utah. As Bill lifted the heavy case, the handle came off in his hand. How would he carry the heavy bag and help his brood make the transfer? Fortunately, Andrea had befriended a young sailor on the train. He graciously offered to help Kathleen and the kids while Bill staggered down the platform carrying his cargo in both arms.

Over the years. Bill collected other things, including cut glass, Christmas plates, silverware, bow ties, and plaid pants. He never met another collector with whom he did not enter into easy con- versation. In his senior years, while crippled with Parkinson's Disease, Bill amused himself for hours by sorting through bags of pennies, reading coin periodicals, and trading odds and ends with local "coin buddies." Over the years. Bill's collecting sometimes moved from passion to obsession and took him away from his family. None-the-Iess, his enthusiasm spread infectiously to any children or grandchildren willing to learn to see art, history, and craftsmanship in a tiny metal disc.

WELCOME

to Stack's International Sale

Welcome to our annual International Sale, an Official Auction of the New York International Numismatic Convention. Plan to attend not only our auction, but the Convention itself, held at the famous Waldorf- Astoria hotel in midtown Manhattan and featuring numismatic vendors of ancient and world coins from around the globe (see flyer with show information printed elsewhere in this catalogue).

This year we are proud to feature the Querendon and Rajj Collections, both collections made up exclusively of gold and a select few coins of other precious metals such as platinum and palladium. Although we haven't tallied the numbers, our impression is that over two-thirds of the sale is gold! So whether you think the recent uptick in gold prices is just the beginning or whether you think that $1,400 gold is a bubble, there is something for you in this sale large gold coins that will sell for modest premiums to their gold value or great rarities that will not again see the light of day for decades.

The Querendon Collection, nearly 300 lots of Ancient and World gold coins, is the collection of a South American industrialist that was put together in the 1940s and 1950s and has rested safely in a bank vault since the late 1950s. The Querendon collector's appetite was chiefly European gold coinage, stretching from the late medieval period to the 20* century, although he included some remarkable Ancients and Latin American issues as well. Highlights are numerous, but a few special coins literally jump from the pages of this catalogue. Among our favorites is the Bohemian 10 Ducats of 1648 struck at Prague, an enormous gold piece graded AU-55 (NGC). Another 10 Ducats, this time a hexagonal issue of 1663 of Michael Apafi of Transylvania, will attract attention not only for its curious shape but also for the remark- able half-length armored portrait on the obverse. For those who prefer coins of the ancient world, we note a lustrous gold Aureus of Lucius Verus in Superb Extremely Fine.

The Rajj Collection, another of our headline consignments composed exclusively of precious metal coinages, also makes up nearly 300 lots of the sale and dovetails quite nicely with the Querendon Collection. Col- lected chiefly in the 1980s and 1990s, the Rajj Collection combines some of the rarest and most iconic issues of the World with modern issues that came into their own in the 1960s through 1980s. In a time before kilo-size or even larger gold coins (see the 10-kiIo Australian gold piece in this sale, for example!), the Rajj collector strove to acquire the largest gold coin available from every country he could locate. We think he's done a remarkable job, and we trust that you will feel the same. Feast your eyes on what is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful coins in the world, an 1839 Una and the Lion 5 Pounds of Creat Britain, graded Proof-62 CAMEO by NCC. Joining Una are 5 Guineas or 5 Pounds pieces of nearly every British monarch from Charles II to George VI, including a super-choice 1711 5 Guineas of Anne, graded AU-58 by NGC. Among many other classic early issues we should mention a very rare Russian Catherine II 10 Rubles dated 1772 struck over a 10 Rubles of her predecessor Peter III. If beauty and rarity are watchwords by which to collect, the Rajj collection has been quite successful. Among its modern issues are many stupendous designs, such as the Great Wall and dragon motifs on the Chinese 500 Yuan of 1988. Multiple dozens of low mintage coins will tantalize how about a Bhutanese Platinum 5

Sertums of 1966 commemorating the 40* Anniversary of the Accession of Jigme Wangchuk, one of just 72 struck and a coin that will cost only a few thousand dollars? This is just one of many coins sporting mintages of less than 1,000 pieces, with many boasting fewer than 100 pieces struck. This is not the last you will see of the Rajj Collection - the U.S. coins, also featuring many stupendous gold rarities, will see the light of day in a forthcoming Stack's auction.

While on the topic of large gold coins, we must mention the positively huge Australian coin that graces this auction, an Australian 10-kilo gold piece minted in 2006. One of just seven struck of the first 10-kilo issue ever produced, this coin commemorating the Year of the Dog contains nearly 322 ounces of gold and is Serial #1. This gargantuan coin proved to be a great investment for its consignor, and we expect it will be too for its next owner.

Also hailing from the other side of the world is a pattern Chinese Gold Tael of the Cyclical Date 1907, a coin that is graded AU-58 (NGC) that boasts a wonderful history and is also a significant rarity. Given the surge in interest in Chinese coins of all types in the last decade, we expect great fireworks when this coin comes across the auction block.

While there are many numismatic items of great rarity, not all of these can also boast great pedigree. In this sale we are proud to offer a set of Russian decorations that once belonged to the Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaievich Romanov the Elder, a group of Orders of St. George the Martyr featuring the Star of the Order as well as Crosses of the First Class and Second Class. These sumptuous works of numismatic art are also of enormous rarity. There were in fact only 25 members of the Order in the First Class in its century-long existence, making the First Class Cross an extreme rarity ^in fact, we believe it is the only specimen in private hands!

While we have enjoyed reviewing some of the biggest collections or most expensive coins, many other consignors have made this well- balanced sale possible. Take for example the superb 1830 8 Escudos of Argentina, a great rarity from the Porteho Collection, or perhaps the Gem 1935 Proof Set of New Zealand featuring the Waitangi Crown that hails from the W.L. Carson Collection; we sold Mr. Carson's U.S. Proof Sets to great fanfare in our 75* Anniversary Sale this past November. Or consider a German pattern coin from the Douglas Jennings Collection of this genre many high style pieces by famed designer Karl Goetz are on offer here in whatever metal and price range you desire! Or perhaps you crave coins of the Ancient World? If so, consider the choice Decadrachm of Syracuse from the collection of our very own Dave Bowers, or perhaps one of the wonderfully styled pieces of Ancient Greek silver coinage from Part I of the Syracuse Collection (further offerings from this col- lection will be featured in our April 2011 Coin Galleries Sale).

We hope you like what you see in the pages to follow, and that you will be able to pick up at least one piece whether $500, or $50,000 for your collection. If your collecting activities have slowed and selling has been on your mind, please call and speak to Vicken Yegparian, Greg Cohen, or John Pack to devise a sales plan that's right for you. Keep in mind that as the Official Auctioneer of the July 2011 ANA Sale in Chicago, we are seeking quality consignments of Ancient and World Coins in addition to U.S. Coins and Paper Money. Pick up the phone and call us today!

Tetradrachms were first minted in Sicily at Syracuse, and became the standard denomination throughout the island. The Syracusan male charioteer in quadriga was adapted, with local variations, by nearly every mint in Sicily. Kraay notes that the chariot motif reflected the interests of the Syracusan ruling aristocracy in "equestrian pursuits and particularly their pride as competi- tors in the great sporting contests of Delphi and Olympia" ( ACGC p. 209).

During this period of coinage at Syracuse, the standing male charioteer and Arethusa head in profile became the standard designs on Syracusan tet- radrachms. Within these strictures, however, considerable artistic creativity was possible, particularly in the treatment of Arethusa. Her features varied from severe archaic divinity to classic contemporary beauty, with hair styles reflecting the latest in Syracusan fashion. Even the fairly standard quadriga obverse showed evolution in depicting the power and vitality of the horses.

Wonderful Syracusan Decadrachm of Euainetos

SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 405-367 B.C. AR Decadrachm. Reverse die signed by the artist Euainetos. Ca. 405 / 0-400 / 390 B.C. Charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving galloping quadriga left; above, Nike flying right, crowning charioteer with wreath; in exergue beneath heavy band, shield, greaves, cuirass, and crested Attic helmet, all connected by a horizontal spear and above A0AA. Rv. Head of Arethusa left, wreathed with reeds, wearing triple- pendant earring and necklace; around, four dolphins swimming; below, EY-AINE. 42.90 grams. Gallatin dies III/ Cl. SNG ANS -. Jameson 828 (same dies). Dewing -. Gulbenkian 312 (same dies). A hint of surface porosity, minimal die-rust. Nicely toned and with a full signature of the artist. Good Very Eine. (35,000-40,000) The decadrachm of Euainetos is undoubtedly one of the most famous of all ancient Greek coins, and its size and dignified majesty have always made it the centerpiece of any Greek collection. The treatment of the head of the goddess Arethusa especially defines classical beauty, and it was copied or adapted for coin issues in such far-flung places as North Africa, Spain,

South Italy, Lokris Opuntion, the Peloponnese and Crete. The decadrachms of Syracuse can be divided into two main types. The first, smaller issue shows Arethusa's hair confined in an ornate net, and many of the dies bear the initial or signature of the artist Kimon. The Kimonian decadrachms were struck ca. 405 B.C. from three obverse and 13 reverse dies. The second, much larger issue, from which this coin comes, shows the hair of Arethusa free but bound with a reed, appropriate for a water-nymph. The earliest dies of this series bear the signature of Euainetos and were struck sometime around 400 B.C. Euainetos' decadrachms constitute a fairly large emission, with 24 known obverse and 44 known reverse dies, 21 carrying the name Euainetos, and were perhaps struck over a 10 to 15 year period (Kraay, ACGC p. 232). Silver decadrachms, like the gold fractions that were produced at approximately the same time, were high value coins struck for a specific purpose other than ordinary commerce. It seems very likely that they were intended to pay for mercenary soldiers, ships and supplies for the ongoing war against Carthage. That so much care should have been taken to glorify the civic pride of Syracuse and the human form on what was otherwise a very utilitarian item is a potent testament to this most venerable ancient city.

The staters of Aegina served as the first universally recognized trade coins throughout the eastern Mediterranean region, and as such were sometimes forged. When bankers handled these coins, they would often apply a small punch mark which would expose any plated coins in circulation and, should the banker come across the coin again in a future transaction, it would serve as an easily recognizable sign that he had already verified the coin's weight and purity.

Attractive Early Tetradrachm from Rhodes

87 ISLANDS OFF CARIA. Rhodes. Ca. 408/7-404 B.C. AR Tet- radrachm. Reverse die signed by Tauro... Head of Helios facing slightly right. Rv. Catalogues of the early silver coinage of Rhodes," CH IX, 49b (A32/P42) = D. Berend, "Les tetradrachmes de Rhodes de la premiere periode, ler partie," SNR 51 (1972), 21 (this coin). Ashton 6. Extremely rare - only one of three known with the Tauro... signature. Attractive style. Choice Very Fine. (6,000-8,000)

The earliest coinage from the island of Rhodes was produced by three independent towns: Kamiros, Lindos and lalysos. None of these archaic coinages appear to have been resumed after 480 B.C. Curiously, the island had no coinage of its own after this date until the union of the three cities into one state with a new federal capital, Rhodes, in 408 B.C. From early times the island assumed a position of considerable commercial importance. Its prosperity came mainly from the carrying trade. It was a distribution center of Levantine and especially Phoenician goods. Its colonies not only extended eastward along the southern coast of Asia Minor, but also to the west as far as Gela in Sicily and Rhegion in southern Italy. Prior to the union, the towns of Kamiros, Lindos and lalysos were members of the Delian League. In the absence of coinage it may be assumed that their annual assessment was in ships for the allied fleet. In 412 the island revolted from Athens and became the headquarters of the Peloponnesian fleet. The pressures of financing and conducting the war with Athens, which lasted from 412/11 to 407 B.C., un- doubtedly provided the catalyst for the union and the creation of a new and extensive coin issue. The choice of Helios, the sun-god, as the identifying symbol of the new city was based on the fact that the citizens of all three of the original towns claimed descent from Helios, to whom, according to Pindar, the whole island was sacred.

Exceptional Grade 1849 One Hundred Dalere

194 DANISH WEST INDIES. State Treasury. One Hundred Dalere. Law of 4.4.1849. Pick 6. Uncirculated. No.297. Hand dated January 20, 1850. Fully signed and issued note. A stunning example of a note that is rare in aU grades. This note is essentially as made. We note trace handling from over the years, but the condition is mind boggling to say the least. Seen from the back are two as made paper ripples from the printing process that are fairly well concealed in the gray color. An exceptional note for the finest collection. (8,000-10,000)

195 DANISH WEST INDIES. State Treasury. Two Dalere. Laws of

4.4.1849 and 1898. Pick 8a. Choice Very Fine. No. 1369. Fully issued with seven signatures. Hand dated August 1, 1899. Much, much rarer than the ''blanks" with three signatures. (350-450)

High-Grade Five Francs Pick 17

200 DANISH WEST INDIES. National Bank of the Danish West Indies.

Five Francs in Gold. 1905. Pick 17. About Uncirculated. No.500,477. A rather rare note in any grade. This example boasts bold and fresh colors and displays only some light corner handling; otherwise it is as made at Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. over 100 years ago. The top edge sadly exhibits a former tape mounting trace. However, that does not diminish the importance of this note which is quite desirable for many collectors, including those of American Paper Currency. It was not long after this note was issued that these islands came to the United States in a rather wise acquisition. (4,000-5,000)

Incredible Serial Number 1 Danish West Indies 20 Gold Francs

Last Sold in the 1995 Memphis Sale

201 DANISH WEST INDIES. National Bank of the Danish West Indies. Twenty Francs in Gold. 1905. Pick 19. Very Fine.

No. 000,001. This is truly an amazing example of great rarity, and it is exceptional in that it is the serial number one note of its type. It is rare in any grade with few seen. The pedigree chain is brief for this monumental Danish- American related museum piece. The note, according to the family it came from, was taken off the presses at Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co. in London at the time of printing and went to Denmark. Obvi- ously, it was kept as a pocket piece as there are several vertical folds, handling, and some staining at the back right end which looks to have some glue traces (scrapbooked?). The note found its way through the family to Wisconsin of all places and the owner called R.M. Smythe & Co. (supplying them with an old article from a Danish newspaper about the note) about the

value of such a piece. It of course glided nicely into the 1995 Memphis Paper Auction by Smythe and was bought by the present consignor who has held it privately as the center of this superb holding of Danish West Indies paper money until now. The note is an important piece on many levels. Perhaps the most significant is its American relationship from what are now the Virgin Islands which were purchased for $25,000,000 in 1917. (An 1867 deal for $2,500,000 did not go through.) This series uses primarily English texts as this language was much preferred over Danish at the time and for many years prior. A priceless note which was estimated for $7,500 and up way back in 1995. A note that truly has the aura of five-figure or higher realization in the offing. (10,000-15,000)

From the 1995 Memphis Sale #139 (R.M. Smythe & Co. June 17, 1995, Lot 1238).

202 DANISH WEST INDIES. Agency of the Bank of St. Thomas, St. Croix. Bearer Check. 1890. Very Fine, split. Fully issued bearer check on blue-gray paper for $35 dated May 27th, 1890. Appears to be a Danish imprint. Delicate paper, split in half on hard vertical fold. Rare check on this location and the first we have seen. (100-200)

203 DANISH WEST INDIES. 1878 Stock Certificate for 1,000 Kroner of St. Croix Faelles-Sukkerkogerier Aktieselskabet. Extremely Fine. Printed on bond paper. Green with black imprint. 36.0 x 22.3cm. Still attached is a sheet of 30 coupons for 5% interest per annum. Interest Guarantee is signed by Janus August Garde, Governor General of the Danish West Indies, 1872-1881. Cer- tificate is signed by Moritz G. Melchior (1816-1884), one of the

most accomplished and influential Jews of 19th century Europe, head of the trading company Moses & Son G. Melchior, after the death of his father in 1845. Residing in the Danish capital of Copenhagen, Melchior managed a fleet of merchant ships serving Australia and the West Indies. He was a member of the Danish Parliament's Upper House, the Landsthing, 1866-1874; Aider- man (1851-1869); member of the Maritime and Commercial Court (1862-1883). He was a founder of Privatbanken, the Free Trade Society and the Chamber of Commerce. Active in the Danish Jewish community, Melchior served as leader of his Congrega- tion. Among his many friends was writer and storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, whose last years were spent as a guest in Melchior's home. Less is known with cer- tainty about St. Croix Faelles-Sukkerkogerier, a cooperative sugar refinery in what is today the U.S. Virgin Islands. The presence of all the coupons suggests that the venture was not a success and folded not long after the stock was issued. Only two other certificates have been offered for sale, one without the coupons. Here is a significant historical rarity of Danish, Caribbean, American and Judaic interest, one of the rare examples to appear at auction. (500-750)

Similar wide border presents 16 minus- cule figures from various Thorvaldsen sculptures around the form of seated Dania receiving a tiny cherub and lyre from a nude girl seated on a dolphin. His Thorvaldsen Medal is a significant rarity of the Danish Series. (1,500-1,750) Thorvaldsen (1768-1844) was the greatest European sculptor after Antonio Canova. Maintaining studios in Rome and Copenhagen, he excelled in heroic sculpture including the Lion of Lucerne; figures from antiquity including Jason, Ganymede, Venus, Psyche, and the Three graces seen on this medal's border. Prooflike Specimen 20 Francs of the Hundred Days

2x photo

366 FRANCE. Napoleon, as Emperor, 1804-1814. 20 Francs, 1815 A. Paris. The Hundred Days. Laureate head L Rv. EMPIRE FRAN- QAIS around Laurel wreath enclosing value. Gad.l025a, KM 705.1. Small "A" mintmark is typical of the coins struck during Napoleon's brief return to power after escaping exile on Elba. Gorgeous flashing prooflike fields and lightly frosted reliefs give this breath-taking coin an appearance wholly unlike that of any ordinary Mint State example. The strike, however, does not show the precision to be expected from a true Proof. This coin, as the late B. Max Mehl used to say, "carries its own credentials," and must have been made for presentation or other special purpose. Specimen Choice Uncirculated. (5,000-7,500)

Chafing in exile on the small island of Elba off the Tuscan coast, Napo- leon escaped to the southern coast of France and marched swiftly on Paris, winning over forces sent to arrest him by restored Bourbon King Louis XVIII. Napoleon strove mightily to recreate a French Army to counter the advancing Allies, but the men he needed lay dead from Russia to the Rhine. The Emperor threw what men he could gather against his enemies before suffering final defeat at Waterloo and perpetual banishment on the South Atlantic island of Saint Helena. Enshrined forever in romantic legend as the Hundred Days, his resurrected Empire only lasted from March 20 to June 22, 1815.
